The Heart, Its Tendency to Evil, with Hints towards its Purification, 1870The Heart of Man: Either Temple of God or Habitation of Satan is a work calculated to awaken & promote a Christian disposition. It invokes highly figural, emblematic imagery to depict various states of the soul. The original German work by Johannes Gossner was first published in 1812 but the images were based on an earlier Catholic emblem book from the 1500s or 1600s. Gossner had originally been Catholic, but was ousted for his evangelical tendencies
